The emblem of Nicaragua features a triangle with a rainbow inside, which represents the unity of all Nicaraguans and the diversity of its people. In the center of the triangle, there is the country's national coat of arms, which depicts a shield that is supported by two wings of a condor. The shield includes five volcanoes that symbolize the five nations of the original union of Central America, as well as a red Phrygian cap, which represents freedom. There is also a rainbow in the shield, which represents peace. Above the shield, there are five flags that represent the five Central American countries, while below it there is a scroll bearing the national motto of Nicaragua, "En Dios Confiamos" (In God We Trust). The emblem was adopted in 1971 and is used on official documents and buildings of the government of Nicaragua.
